Things to do in Hervey Bay

With sun-drenched beaches, calm waters, and a friendly local vibe, Hervey Bay is the kind of place where every day feels like a holiday. Whether you’re here for a quick escape or a longer stay, there’s no shortage of ways to unwind and enjoy the bay life.

Here are some of our favourite things to do while you’re in town.

Whale Watching

Every year from late July to early November, Hervey Bay comes alive with some seriously special visitors – Humpback Whales. Known as Australia’s whale watching capital, this is one of the only places in the world where you can see these gentle giants up close, lingering and playing in the calm waters of the Great Sandy Straits.

There’s nothing quite like watching a Humpback breach right before your eyes. Jump on a local whale watching cruise and experience these incredible creatures in their natural habitat. It’s a must-do while you’re here!

Before you set sail – or once you’re back on land – be sure to swing by the Bayswater Bar and Grill for a bite to eat or drink by the water.

Day trips to K’gari (Fraser Island)

Just a short ferry ride from Hervey Bay, K’gari is a natural wonder that needs to be seen to be believed. As the world’s largest sand island and a World Heritage-listed gem, it’s a mix of rugged beauty and untouched serenity.

Think crystal-clear freshwater lakes, ancient rainforests growing straight out of the sand, and endless stretches of wild beach. Explore it all behind the wheel of a 4WD, or join a guided tour for a stress-free adventure and plenty of postcard moments.

It’s the kind of place you’ll be talking about long after you’ve left – and it’s right on Hervey Bay’s doorstep.

Urangan Pier

Stretching nearly a kilometer out to see, Urangan Pier is one of the longest piers in Australia – and a must-see attraction while you’re in Hervey Bay.

Originally built in the early 1900s to support the sugar industry, it’s now a favourite spot for a slow stroll, a bit of fishing, or simply soaking up the salty air and sweeping ocean views. Don’t forget to pack your camera – sunset here is something special!

Even better? The Bayswater Bar and Grill is right at the beginning of the pier – perfect for a cold drink, fresh seafood and a front-row seat to the view.

Lady Elliot Island

Looking to add a reef adventure to your Hervey Bay getaway? Lady Elliot Island is just a scenic 40-minute flight away – the perfect day trip to discover the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef’s vibrant underwater world.

Often called the “Home of the Manta Ray”, Lady Elliot Island is surrounded by crystal-clear waters and thriving reef systems. It’s a dream spot for snorkelling and diving – or just kicking back on the beach and soaking up the serenity. As you explore, keep a lookout for turtles, manta rays, and schools of colourful reef fish cruising through the coral.
